#movember

In lieu of growing a moustache for “movember” or “no shave november” this year I am going to post some book recommendations.

These are three books that have deepened my understanding of male depression (read: my depression). I hope this inspires someone to read or listen to at least one.

  1. i don’t want to talk about it - terrance real

  2. the will to change - bell hooks

  3. siddartha - herman hesse

Depression and suicidal ideation have been challenges I’ve struggled with on and off since I was a teenager.

Sadness, anxiety, and uncertainty are complex emotions to navigate in a world that often sends mixed signals about their appropriateness for men.

I’ve been really fortunate to have a supportive family, friends, access to treatment, education, and resources, all of which have helped prevent me from taking my own life so far.

I know that’s not the case for many people; perhaps most men.

Maybe one day, we will all receive the help we truly need.

Not just the help we think we need.

Stay patient. Stay hopeful.
