First Post

Hi.

This is my first post.

I’m glad you are here.

As I develop as a writer, hopefully you the reader, will experience better and better writing.

I am writing now because I lost a job that took me a long time to get. I held it for ~7ish months before being laid off. I found another job soon after and frankly I did not like it. So I quit.

Now, I am figuring out what to do next.

Both jobs were Business Development Rep/ Sales Development Rep which are essentially the same thing. You cold call people, tell them about the product, and then see if they want to meet over a video chat (Zoom, MS Teams, Google, etc.) with an Account Executive. That person goes on to give a presentation on the product, either close a sale or schedule further conversations from there.

The Business Development Rep (BDR) or Sales Development Rep (SDR) is fun at first. But after you do it 100 times the fun aspect of it starts to diminish and it becomes work. The job is good when you want to talk to people but is very not fun when you do not.

I guess that is most sales jobs though. I came to the conclusion that to be a good sales person you essentially have to be always or near always available. The job itself is pretty easy when you are in a social and gregarious mood, but extremely difficult when you are not.

Emotional labour I think is the best term for sales. It’s an endurance sport for sure. Some people are more geared to it than others.

I have a lot more respect for the profession now that I’ve been up close and personal to it.

Bye.
